Representatives of Central Asian countries participate in a seminar on dust and sand storms
Representatives of Turkmenistan, together with their colleagues from Central Asia, took part in a seminar held in Uzbekistan on combating dust and sand storms, the press service of the Uzbek Environmental Protection Agency reports. The seminar was organized by the Global Mechanism of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia, the International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas, the German Society for International Cooperation and the International Risk Research Institute. “It is necessary not only to respond to the consequences of sand and dust storms, but also to actively identify their sources, developing a comprehensive neutralization strategy. Given the possible location of sources of sand and dust storms beyond borders, joint efforts are required to successfully resolve the problem. In this context, the seminar brings together exclusively scientists and experts focused on this problem for the purpose of effective discussion and development of practical solutions,” said Suna Park, director of the National Center for Green Transformation and Adaptation to Climate Change under the Ministry of Ecology, in his welcoming speech. It is noted that the main goals of the seminar with the participation of delegates from Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are: taking measures to neutralize land degradation, revising their targets, creating a regional platform and an appropriate center for data exchange, developing a plan for the implementation of the Regional Risk Management Strategy droughts and leveling of their consequences.
